Tax Filing Procedures

The City of Anniston requires that all tax returns and payments be submitted electronically using the MAT website at the same time you file your State of Alabama taxes. All Sales, Consumer’s Use, Seller’s Use, Rental, and Lodgings Taxes are due on the 20th of the month for the preceding filing period. If the 20th is on a weekend or City Holiday, then the taxes are due on the next City business day.

The City of Anniston has a number of tax rates. The tax rate used to determine the amount of tax to be collected will depend upon the nature and situation of the transaction taking place. Yes. The City of Anniston requires that all tax returns and payments be submitted electronically using the MAT website at the same time you file your State of Alabama taxes.

If a bulk return was filed on the MAT website which did not contain the City of Anniston tax information, an amended tax return should be submitted with the payment of the tax due. Please see the “How can I amend a previously filed return in order to correct an error?” Tax FAQ for more information regarding how to amend previously filed returns.

All tax returns must be filed, and payments made no later than the 20th day of the month after each filing period unless the 20th day falls on a Saturday, Sunday or City holiday. In those cases, the return and payment are due the following business day. Any tax return or payment submitted after the due date is considered late and is subject to penalty and interest.

Be advised: the cutoff time for timely filing a return and paying the tax through the MAT website is 4pm CST.
